Question input/output error copying from cdrom to hard drive

I get this input/output error when I copy from the cdrom to my hard drive. The unusual thing is, it does not happen for all the files, only files that are fairly large and then the result varies. Sometimes it will coppy a few k and then show the error. Other times it will copy half of the file and then give the error and sometimes it will give an error and copy 0 k, but list the file in the new location on my hard drive. I wonder if it has something to do with either my cdrom speed, a Yamaha 10/24/40 or my chip. I was able to install the distribution with it (Mandrake 8.2). My chip is an AMD K6-2 at 500 MHz and I have 320 Megs of RAM. Any answers?

One of the two, the cdrom or the hard drive, is probably going wonky. Luckily the failures are going to be registered in "dmesg", so sorting out which of the two is going berserk is going to be quick. If the OS otherwise performs fine, most likely its just the cdrom.

There is a chance that the cdrom's problems are in software, but its doubtful, mainly what does dmesg say while you go?

Cheers,

Finegan

Where do I find this?

Pardon my ignorance, but where do I view the dmesg logs?

I'll give it a try

I'll try it tonight since it is my home machine where this is happening. the cdrom is brand new but the hard drive it old. I will see what the logs say.
