Info on setting laptop_mode

Hi everybody I have just a question.
I heard the laptop_mode can ruin the HD..
If I enable it by doing
Code:
# echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode
how much it could be dangerous for my HD?
Also I never use battery, so, how does it can be usefull? Laptop mode affects also the fan?

Code:
~$ sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda | egrep '(Load_Cycle_Count|Temperature)'
193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 098 098 000 Old_age Always - 20910
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0002 134 134 000 Old_age Always - 41 (Lifetime Min/Max 12/54)
~$
