First of all welcome to the community!
some of the distributions(which I don't know the reason really) have the sound settings muted and level 0.
To correct that do the following
open a terminal
run the command alsaconf
unmute the channels and raise the sound volume , unmute by pressing the button m and when you finish press q to quit

login as root (this can be done with the command su and then by typing the password)
then run the following command to save the settings so as to keep them next time you boot
alsactl store

i think that i made a mistake here
you've got to login as root from the beggining
then after configuring the settings
do

alsactl store

and in the file /etc/modutils/alsa-base add the following line

post-install snd alsactl restore
