Sound does not work after boot

Hi all.

My soundcard used to work fine but recently after every boot I must run alsaconf in order for my sound card to start working.
Here is the error that gets posted to the syslog
Code:
Apr 17 09:39:03 localhost sound: Loading sound module (snd-cmipci) succeeded
Apr 17 09:39:04 localhost alsactl: /usr/sbin/alsactl: load_state:1139:
Apr 17 09:39:04 localhost alsactl: No soundcards found...
Apr 17 09:39:04 localhost sound: Loading mixer settings failed
Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this. My card is a onboard cm8738 sound card.

Thanks in advance.

Hi again.

I'm still strugling with this sound problem.

Looking at the manual for alsactl, I see there are only 2 commands for starting to use with alsactl. They are restore and store. I tried rebooting and then using the restore command. After which the sound works.

So my guess would be that the wrong parameters are used by the bootup script for this command. Does anyone know what the name of the script is that inserts these modules. Any other ideas?

Thanks

I see from your sig that you seem to be running Mandy. Try this: add alsasound in the default startup services. It soulds like you've recently gotten a kernel/alsa upgrade that borked things, as nobody seems to want to tell us that alsa now has to be added as a service at boot.

This is something that you should be able to do with the Mandrake Control Center with a few mouse clicks, if I remember correctly. Its been a while since I have run Mandy, but adding services to the default runlevel wasn't any harder than that, from what I remember.

I found this out on my Gentoo machine on one of the last upgrades and didn't see what had to be done until I read the compile message near the end about adding alsasound to the bootup (manually, you could add it into /etc/rc.d, I think - like I said, its been a while).

sound

Hi I had the same problem, everytime I rebooted I lost the soun, and had to run alsaconf. I dont know how or why, but when I removed a webcam the problem diapeared, when I put it back I would have to re set the sound. I am a newcomer so I don't know why, but at a guess, the webcam was plugged in when I installed. Adrian

Thanks for your replies.

I've looked at the started services and alsa( not alsasound?) is set to start at boot. But it was currently stopped. When I started it, I got the following error/warning message:
Code:
Doing alsactl to store mixer settings ...[ OK ]
Shutting down ALSA sound driver (version 1.0.6): /dev/snd/controlC0: no. (sound is being used by pid ))[FAILED]
ALSA driver (version 1.06) is already running
After which sound does not work ( expected!). But again after running alsaconf the sound starts working.

This is very frustrating. Does anyone have ideas on what to try next?
Thanks

Hi burrhead34, This is what I was told to do: open Konsole, type su then your password, then type: alsaconf a screen will pop-up just follow through clicking the OK buttons and finish with: alsactl and store.
Also in another konsole type: alsamixer and set levels, at the end type alsactl store. I used this with SuSE I don't know if its the same for other distro's? good luck with it Adrian

The ALSA commands should eb the same pretty much regardless of distro, provided you're using ALSA for your sound configs. I know that's also the default for Slackware!
