Exclamation HP Scanjet 5300C

i have an HP Scanjet 5300c scannet installed via USB. at first, XSANE will detect my scanner... whenever i start to scan or preview, it'll take forever, and display a small white border. i'd rescan/repreview, and it would freeze the program, to the point where i have to logout, login, restart XSANE... and then it tells me it cannot locate my scanner. i have run scannerdrake, and it seems to work fine... but i can't scan anything. i'm running Mandrake Linux 9.1. the scanner works just fine when i boot into XP. oh yeah, and sometimes the light on the scanner will go to the end, and just stay there and not move. i find this very strange, and appreciate any help you guys could give me...

also, once this problem is solved, any help on sharing this scanner with my fiancee's computer which runs XP... she would like to be able to use the scanner from her computer...

thanks in advance
