HOWTO Access Serial Ports Using PHP?

Hi,

I am looking to develop a web based application that can communicate with some microelectronics which will be connected to a Serial port.

So here are my queries:

1) Is it possible to read and write to the serial port using PHP?
2) If so, how?

Needs a special PHP setup though!
