how to make a Linux BIOS to boot from USB

Linux is so neat. I am newbie to Linux. I read in the forum that you can use USB to boot Linux. I have been trying to get Linux to work on my Pentium PC. I have OpenSuse.

Can I put Linux into my BIOS? The BIOS does not give me a choice to boot from my USB. It also does not give me a choice to boot from Firewire PCI device. I think that if I can put some type of Linux into my BIOS that then I can get it to boot Linux from USB and Firewire PCI.

There is a project to put a fully functional Linux system into BIOS, but it only works on some hardware. I doubt something as old as what you are working with would support it.

If the BIOS doesn't support booting to USB, then you just can't do it, basically. Unless there is a BIOS update available which enables it, which again is unlikely due to the age of your hardware. There are some tricks you can do like chainloading a Linux install on a USB device from GRUB on the MBR, but it isn't as clean an option as direct USB booting.

Thank you for your comment.

I am trying to figure out if I can put a new BIOS into the Pentium PC. I do not want to use the BIOS that it has because it can not boot my USB or Firewire PCI.

1) Who knows how I can do this?

2) How can I tell GRUB to boot from USB or from Firewire PCI? For example, if my usb is at /dev/usb? What do I have to change, the menu.lst file?
