Question How to install drivers for GPU and APU

Hello, I-m trying an install of APU drivers along with GPU drivers. I need GPU for rendering, just one monitor would be used, driven by APU.

Using ubuntu 14.04 64 bits, I get (lscpci):

PHP Code:
00:01.0 VGA compatible controllerAdvanced Micro DevicesInc. [AMD/ATIKaveri [Radeon R7 200 Series]
01:00.0 VGA compatible controllerNVIDIA Corporation Device 13c2 (rev a1
What I have tried already:
1. Install propietary drivers for apu
2. Reboot, seems it worked ok
3. Install Nvidia drivers, got problems loging in again

Had a look at xorg.conf there was only nvidia driver, no more fglrx.

APU is from amd A8 cpu
GPU is nvidia gtx 970

How can I run both drivers?

I don't know that you can.
Both overwrite files like /usr/lib64/libGL.so to point to their own libs. Try
Quote:
ls -l /usr/lib64/libGL*
You will probably see AMD, Nvidia & Mesa libs :-/. You can't have them all at the same time.

Thank you, makes sense. Pretty much I would need a secondary gpu from same make (nvidia) in order to get both gpus working at the same time, right?

I think so. /You could get both working on OSS drivers with the performance penalties involved, but otherwise I would put a card on ebay.

Since you already have the AMD APU, I would recommend using the APU in dual-graphics mode with a discrete AMD card, where both GPUs work together on one output. Unfortunately, the state of this in the OSS drivers is non-existent. But I would still highly recommend for anyone to get AMD over NVidia, whom Linus has described as the worst company to deal with. The driver support is also not too good in the OSS driver (although getting better.)

This APU could be combined with another discrete R7 2** series GPU. The proprietary drivers would also be necessary.

Thanks, my issue is that I currently need the gpu to be Nvidia (because cycles supports it in a better fashion, opencl still experimental). I wanted the APU to drive the monitor and GPU to be headless, as actually the chip in this APU is "slow" for rendering.

Probably will add second gpu at some other time, for this purpose.

Regards.

I have an AMD card and Nvidia card in the same machine. You can use both for computing, though not proprietary graphics simultaneously. You might want to look at this: http://streamcomputing.eu/blog/2011-...deon-on-linux/ Yes it's old but still relevant.
