how to detect a sound-card?

Dear all,

I have an old Compaq deskpro iwth PII processor which I am using as X-terminal. I would like to paly some music on it too but I cannot even find the soundcard. It has mic and speakers ports in the rear, and someone confirmed me it has a soundcard.

lspci shows:
Code:
ottt@tertullianus:~/jutuq/lauluq$ lspci
0000:00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX Host bridge (rev 03)
0000:00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corp. 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX AGP bridge (rev 03)
0000:00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82557/8/9 [Ethernet Pro 100] (rev 05)
0000:00:14.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ISA (rev 02)
0000:00:14.1 IDE interface: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE (rev 01)
0000:00:14.2 USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 USB (rev 01)
0000:00:14.3 Bridge: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ACPI (rev 02)
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage Pro AGP 1X/2X (rev 5c)
Of course, sound does not work currently, blaming about various devices missing.

None of the above seems to be a soundcard. Are there different ways to find the peripherials in my computer? Do I need to configure/recompile the kernel?

Thanks in advance,

Ott

What sound system are you using (oss, alsa, arts, etc). If it's alsa, you can try 'alsaconf' and see if it picks up your sound card automatically.

Which linux distro are you using?

Seems that your approach worked. It is debian sarge, I installed alsa+friends and it picked up es1688 soundcard. The problem seems to be that it is not a PnP card.

So it is just to find speakers and try...

Thanks a lot!
