Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question How do I read the memory usage in top?

I know that when I see the system using almost all the memory and that I only got a small amount of memory free, the system has reserved that amount of memory and doesn't really "use" that much. But my question is, how do I know how much memory is really used? Sorry, that I can't explain this more clearly.
