I have a Nikon Coolpix 5000, not the same model, but it probably is close enough that I can point you in the right direction.

There are two ways I got pics form my Nikon onto my 500Mhz MDK 9.2 system. I found the easiest way was to buy a USB card reader. Mine is an Optex, there are many makers of these devices. The cost, about $35.00 Canadian. Thats about $30.00 US dollars.

I had to make an entry in fstab file. Here is mine.

/dev/sda1 /mnt/memory_card auto codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1,nosuid,noauto,nodev,user 0 0
/dev/sdb1 /mnt/memory_card2 auto user,iocharset=iso8859-1,exec,kudzu,umask=0,codepage=850,noauto 0 0

Note, I have two cards, I made seperate entries for each.

You also have to make directory entries for each in the file system. You can see mine are /mnt/memory_card and /mnt/memory_card2.

The other method is to install an application and get it to talk directly to your camera. I found this more difficult. If you decide to go this route, have a look at http://www.gphoto.org/ Gphoto has a list of supported cameras and models.

Hope this helps.

have you plugged it in, and rebooted (or shut down turn on) the computer?
what happens?

you should be able to mount (google for mount) it if you are just using it as an 'extra harddrive' if you have no other usb devices, it should be usb0 (correct me if I'm wrong).

Gphoto2 supports your Nikon Coolpix 2200 in PTP mode. On my camera I had to use the manual that came with it to find out how to cange to PTP mode. The windbloze sofware that comes with the camera does not use PTP mode; or it did not on my Coolpix 5000.
