Has anyone sucessfully installed Linux on a Sabertooth 990FX?

Hello,

I recently purchased a ASUS Sabertooth 990FX motherboard to replace my aging tulatin system. The new system has an Phenom 1100t w 16GB of RAM. I recently updated the bios to the latest version 0705 (from 0402) which resolved my usb issues in linux. Heres my new issue:

This board has a Realtek 8111B NIC which isnt supported in any distro im aware of. Most will load the r8169 module which does not work. So i installed a Netgear FA311 into the pci slot which uses the NI Machphyter module which every distro uses. Now linux recognizes the FA311 but fails to connect via dhcp. lspci-v shows the correct module being loaded. Also this card has been verified working on 2 other machines. I also inserted a working GA311 netgear card to no avail. Without network support im kind of stuck in the water.

I have tried Arch Linux (installed no network (used dhcpcd eth0 -- looks for carrier and times out), Debian (this is the distro i want),Ubuntu and Slackware --no network on any of these using any network card i inserted.

To note: All the distros i tried is loading the correct module. I have two other systems that i use these cards in and have verified the module via lspci -v on all three machines.

This system has a UEFI bios, does that matter when the kernel looks at the hardware? (i know there is a EFI parameter in the kernel config which i will verify that its set). Do i need an efi capable nic card?

Anyone have any success with this board? I know Realtek supplies a driver for the onboard NIC which i havent tried yet. Im going to download it and compile it, but i heard its really buggy.

Thanks guys

You mean one of these??
It sounds like you have a successful gnu/linux install with some HW unsupported... is this correct?

Usually we want to you boot what you can and do an lspci - show us what it says.
In general, you should copy and paste what you get from commands rather than describing them.

Realtek 8111B NIC
The rtl8168/8111 driver is supposed to run this thing... according to Realtek this is.

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-linux-685748/
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...4&DownTypeID=3

Netgear FA311
detected and driver loaded - sounds like it is not set up as the default gateway.
use ifconfig to look at network devices (show us) ... you can probably get it set automatically if you disable the onboard nic (if you have that option).

Looks like this is a hardware issue unfortunately. I got Parted Magic 3.7 to work with the GA311 (Part of UBCD 5.0). This really stinks. Oh well guess i should have did my research a little more. Thanks for the help!!

I'm prety sure that one of the systems I've built lately had a 8111E that worked 'out of the box'. I'll need to go check the hardware to be sure, the manufacturer lists the networking chip as 8111D/E (meaning they could use either, depending on whats cheaper or in stock)

There are at least 2 motherboards listed in the HCL here with 8111E chips, and there are reviews on the net using linux with 8111E chips as well, so I dont think that is your problem...

BTW, are you actually running your HDDs in IDE mode?

Cascade you are correct sorry for the typo, it loads the r8169 driver which does not work. As for IDE mode, yes i am because i had win xp installed on another drive and to save time from recreating an image with the ahci drivers, i just defaulted to ide. (i dont have a floppy anymore). A friend of mine here at work built the exact same setup except for the video card and he said ubuntu worked. i am stumped because i tried 3 different pci network cards that came out of my other linux boxes and they all act the same. If i load windows everything works. the only distro that has worked was partition magic 3.7 that came on the UBCD 5.0 recovery disc. I dont think i can RMA the board because it works fine in windows (im at work VNC'ing right into it as i type). Any suggestions would be great. Also i loaded the default bios settings to make sure i didnt mess anything up and have the same issues. I can get to the login screen but i have no usb and no network in linux (using the stock 3.03 kernel in arch and confirmed with latest debian slackware and ubuntu, and also this morning with BSD .

No problem with the typo, mistakes happen.

IDE mode cripples SATA drives in some ways, it disables SATA features like NCQ. Not that the board has floppy, so you'd need to use nLite or something similar to get the AHCI/SATA drivers into a XP disc.

I find it really odd that network cards you know are good with linux arent working either. But right now, I cant think of any reason why that would be the case.....hopefully when this damned headache goes away I'll think of something.

ifconfig

check the routing table.
Also - pick a distro: the one that you normally like which gets the most of the hardware going. This will let people trying to help you focus on specifics. It's no good trying to give you something to try only to find that you have changed install overnight.
