Hardware identifier for linux

Excuse my lack of general linux knowledge here.
For some time now (in my previous Windows life) I've used Belarc to find just what the computer has installed and running.
I'd like to find something similar for Ubuntu.

I haven't used Belarc, but to see what hardware is contained in my system I use lshw from the command line. Normally it should be run as root.

sudo lshw

For a graphical interface, hardinfo is the best I've seen.

I think it's in the Ubuntu repos.

There's a gui for lshw as well, that being lshw-gtk.

Went with our advice Markkie....Worked great. Now I just have to figure from here what it is I need to do to install and use 11.10. I tried to download 11.04 figuring to upgrade to .10, but got message my computer couldn't handle Unity.

Hello Neal, In my experience it is preferable to fresh install than upgrade the distributions, But you will need to backup your data for reloading after the new version is installed.

Also Unity does require better graphics cards than normal here is a link to explain:- https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Demystifying...reRequirements.

Good luck, let us know how you get on!!?
