Hard Lock on startx and killx

A few months ago my motherboard died. The warrently place (who needed to call me to find out how to choose windows in grub when booting :) ended up having to put in a different motherboard. After getting the computer back I started noticing a lot of hard locks, when booting up and starting X I would get a hard lock about 80% of the time, if I start hitting the caps lock key rapidly around when it tries to start X this drops to about 40%... As well playing some games such as enemy territory have caused a hard lock while playing the game, usually after about 5 min of play (interesting to note that when this occurs the game is clearly still running, the mouse and keyboard just don't operate at all), however a ut2004 demo I tried a handfull of times in single player mode (Instant action) hasn't caused a hard lock once, tuxracer as well has been fine:) Also at the time I got the computer back I had of do a lot of work over ssh noticed that working on ssh I would get a hard lock about once every 4 hours or so, usually in the middle of typing a command. I've confirmed it isn't RAM that's the problem, it came with 256 and I bought a 512 and have tried with both and each seperatly and havn't observed any difference. This leave the new motherboard, the video card, and the processor with question marks.

Athalon 1.2G
NVIDIA MX200
M7VIG Pro-D Motherboard

My suspicion is with the motherboard due to the ssh problems and the fact that it is ET that uses network play that seems to get the crashes, however the X problems would seem to suggest that the video card might of got hurt when the motherboard died. Right now my plan is to try running with the on board video card to see if the X problems dissapear but I couldn't find any info on how to switch back. I'd really appreciate anyone who could help me out!

UPDATE: Just had another hard lock while typing into a terminal. An instance of freeamp I had going in the same desktop continued to play in the speakers for a minute after the crash, until the song finished (there weren't any songs to play after), despite the song continuing to play the display remained completely frozen, this is different than the freezes while playing ET as the screen display changed with the game there. This time it took 11 reboots to get X to start, I'm beginning to think my rapid pressing of caps lock is just a placebo :(
Another hard lock doing the same procedure (note this is while typing in the command), song finished again but this time I also inserted a CD which successfuly mounted (signified by the fact CD refused to eject). Also it started X on the very first reboot this time!!

Turned out to be a problem with the nvidia driver,
changing /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Driver "nvidia"
to
Driver "nv"

fixed the problem (though nvidia also fixed their driver a while back too so nvidia works now as well)
