random hard lock ups on nforce2 chip set mobo?

I've spent the past 4 days working on and looking for help on my particular hard freeze problem on an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe mobo.

While I had dug deeply enough to think that it was an IDE problem because I could reliably reproduce the problem by issueing a 'fsck.ext3 -vcc /dev/hda1' after booting off of a knoppix linux on CD, it turns out the problem is with timing of interupts etc with the nforce 2 chip set and the linux kernel.

See the following link for a better description and links to patches and work arounds:

Use the search function of this site.

The nforce2 chipset has a couple of ACPI and APIC-related bugs. To bypass the issue, pass "noapic" and "acpi=off" to the kernel at boot time. If you use Grub, simply add "noapic acpi=off" to the end of the kernel line (without the quotes!). If you use Lilo, add this line:
Code:
append="noapic acpi=off"
...to /etc/lilo.conf, rerun /sbin/lilo to let the changes take effect and then reboot.
