Angry GSA-4081B won't read DVDs or end of CDs

I am having problems with a my LG DVDRAM.

When copying a Mandrake 10 CD to hda6 everything works fine until near the end of the disk I get:

attempt to access beyond end of device
hdd: rw=0, want=1312748, limit=1244420
Buffer I/O error on device hdd, logical block 328186

When I try to play a DVD using gmplayer from the command line I get a lot of initialisation info (including user's .conf files not found, no lirc etc) then:

Playing dvd://1.
libdvdread: Encyrpted DVD support unavailable.
Reading disc structure, please wait...
libdvdread: Can't see to block 495819
libdvdread: Can't see to block 495819
libdvdread: Invalid IFO for VMGM (VIDEO_TS_.IFO).
Can't open VMG info!

dmesg after this has a lot of the following:

hdd: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveRead SeekComplete Error }
hdd: packet command error: error=0x54
ATAPI device hdd:
Error: Illegal request -- (Sense key=0x05)
Cannot read medium - incompatible format -- (asc=0x30, ascq=0x02)
The failed "Read Subchannel" packet command was.........

What am I doing wrong? I am a newbie, but I posted this here because the CD copy error gives me the impression it's not just something I'm doing wrong

Thanks

Question any success?

I have similar problems, i am not sure what my firmware version is as i see there is an update on the LG site (ver. A104), it is a Windows .exe though so I am not sure I want to do that without putting it into a Windows system... it might be fun to try wine,... but not a few minutes later when the drive stops working completely.

http://linux.derkeiler.com/Newsgroup...4-05/0459.html
shows:

"I'm unable to burn DVD's with dvdrecord. I have kernel 2.6.5 installed
and using a GSA-4081B DVD Burner from LG Electronics.

I have already upgraded to the newest firmware A104 - this did not
help. I can't burn DVD in tao so I tried dao. "

No answer has been forthcoming.

If you search the web for LG drive broke linux, you'll find LG drives have had some problems that were due to LG not implementing the standards correctly. Maybe try another drive, and don't buy another LG until they have their act together.
