GRUB error? DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error

Hi everyone,

Bit of a newbie here. There was a power surge here the other day (so much for the surge protector), and my RH 7.3 box stopped booting. When I try to boot it, it starts to go through the process, gets to GRUB, and then stops. It won't take any input.

I tried the install disks for linux rescue and a complete reinstall, and it goes through the motions, but both eventually stop at this error:

hda: read_intr: status=0x59 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error}
hda: read_intr: error=0x01 {AddrMarkNotFound }, LBAsect=24997136, sector=24997136

That's it. Nothing else happens at all. Am I dead in the water? I'd rather not have to reformat and lose my data. At this point, I'm not sure if I have a seperate boot partition. I went with the default RH 7.3 install.

Thanks!

Sean

You fried the electronic of the disk--you might be able to return it to the manufacturer and get it fixed. Otherwise, make a treat out of buying yourself that new hard drive you've been drooling over!

Damn, I figured as much. Thanks for confirming it, though.

You're welcome--but don't sell the manufacturer's warranty short. I've been pleasantly surprised to have a dead drive replaced by a manufacturer because of their long warranty period.

Good luck
