I'm trying to open the proper ports in my firewall, but only the needed ports, so that I can enable hp+ on my new hp printer. I did all the rest of the setup for it now. I want to sign up for hp+ so that I can then sign up for instant ink, as this is going to be the cheapest way to get ink.
I know little about HP+ and don't own an HP printer. Does this just require that the printer can communicate with the internet, or does it communicate via an app running on the Linux host?
Anyway, here's a similar topic that may be helpful: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printe...s/td-p/8471564
It refers to port 9930 UDP, and ports 80/443 TCP, and I assume that this relates to printer to/from AWS comms to facilitate this service.
OK. So while the hp is smart app is messed up again, I was able to fix the main problem with hp's help. I'm signed up for a service called instant ink. I chose to sign up, while I wish it was all FOSS, but not neccessarily free as in beer, it isn't. My wiring was wrong, second problem. It's fixed now. So now the smart app is messed up again on my windows server. However, I have figured out how to check for the number of pages I printed (which is needed for my subscription). I can check it with:
It printed my article. Now it's good enough for now, except for closing uneeded ports, and fixing the app again. I do like the printer, if I can learn about this trouble. It did count the pages right from printing with linux. Now I can work on my other problem, after later tommorrow, fixing the ports and the app again.
I'll work on more tommorrow. Second objective completed today: Print my article and check how to check pages from Linux. Also look into papercut print logger. I'll have to have a more advanced setup later to use papercut print logger.
By the way, if you don't own an hp, what printer brand (if any), do you own, and use on linux, if you are mainly using linux? I picked the brand because it was known to work well on linux, with some, I think, open source tools. I did simple research to narrow down the models according to what I could actually get shipped or buy locally (which is what I did). I had to have fax, so I narrowed it down a bit more too. I know Epson would probably have worked, but in the past, those have broken way to easily. Physically. Other than that, I have just had good experience in past with hp. I'm hating that some things are proprietory, but to get it to work, I guess I may have to do that. The main thing is it works as I'm setting it up. I'm not returning it now, but if you have suggestions of what might be a better brand, I'm all ears for the future. For the foreseeable future I will stick with Linux Mint as my OS for my main computer. I found I cannot get rid of windows, as certain programs might need it to run. But I am almost done reducing windows to less machines. As far as clients and servers go.
Thanks for telling me. With my friend's help, the problem is solved. Do you think in your opinion brother is a better brand? I'm not switching again now, but I could be convinced next time I have the situation.
That would be my subjective opinion. The reality is you really need to research and evaluate for yourself. I don't like the cost of printer inks, and moved to using a mono laser several years ago.
CUPS 3.0 has not arrived yet, but when it does, it will dramatically change the whole printer scene due to the new driverless Internet Printing Protocol (IPP).

I've always had tremendous luck with getting several HP printers working on Linux and other Uni-work alike operating system via use of Hp Linux Printing and Imaging(HPLIP). I'm also quite bit more of an experienced Linux user so I know how to debug quite a few more foul ups and read the what can be known to be complex and hard to understand documentation.
