External monitor on a Dell D600 laptop running Kubuntu Gutsy

I have a Dell D600 laptop with Kubuntu Gutsy installed. lspci shows this :

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250 [Mobility FireGL 9000] (rev 01)

The laptop monitor runs at 1400 x 1050.

I want to use an external monitor using the VGA out. It's an LG Flatron L194WS widescreen running at 1440 x 900. The external monitor works but it runs at 1400 x 1050. I want to be able to close my laptop lid and use the external monitor at 1440 x 900. I don't need 2 screens. I would only need the laptop screen if I needed the laptop outside the house and that is currently unlikely.

I have played around with xorg.conf but I can't get my head round the simple terminology used. I am confused between "screen" and "monitor" etc. I managed to get to the point where I could use Fn + f8 to swich off the laptop monitor and use the external one --- only the external one failed. I have just done a dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg to get things back to default.

I must say that in all my time using Linux I have never had to configure a monitor really. I have been very lucky I know it's time to learn new skills. Can anyone give me any pointers? Sections of xorg.cong are below.

What I really want to know is the terminology of what i am trying to do, I think.

Many thanks!

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R250 [Mobility FireGL 9000]"
Driver "ati"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R250 [Mobility FireGL 9000]"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Modes "1400x1050"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Default Layout"
Screen "Default Screen"
InputDevice "Generic Keyboard"
InputDevice "Configured Mouse"

Progress : I have been playing with xrandr. I can get the external monitor looking reasonable but the screen is offset to the left of the monitor. Adjusting the monitor settings does nothing. I am not sure whether I need to add a "Virtual" to xorg.conf - I have tried this but was / am stabbing in the dark.

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R250 [Mobility FireGL 9000]"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Virtual 1440 900

I am really unsure as to what I am doing here

$ xrandr --output LVDS --off --below VGA-0 --auto

This seems to do what I want to happen so I am there! Not sure of the syntax yet --- or whether "below" is needed. But hey -----
