external hardware modem frustration

I am trying to use Intel MD566X chipset modem with Mandrake 10.1 on AMD Athlon 2000+, 256 Mb RAM. I have attempted configure many. many times and get same message when testing. " System does not appear to be connected to internet". Am using same modem to access here with Win XP.

Am I doing something wrong. Packaging with modem says 'linux', but it is simply not working.
Thanks in advance
Rosemary

Yes - I tried kppp as well as Mandrake config aplication. Same thing happened.

I have just been reading a thread about similar problem with Mdk 10.1 which wasn't present for the writer using a previous version. Maybe a bug?

Another user directed me to a kde site which identified the problem immediatley. For some reason, even though I had said port was ttys0, it was pointing dev/modem. Once changed internet access happened!

Thanks for your input.

yes u either need to set the modem to correct device or if u use /dev/modem then u should have a symlink form /devmodem to /dev/ttys0 or whatever ur modem device is
