ethernet card not working

hi all
I'm trying to install debian on an old pc (Celeron 400) built with some old components and a new eth card
the installation went fine and the installer found an ethernet device and tried a DHCP broadcast as usual but the ethernet card is not working at all (even no led activity)

it's a Digitus Network DN-1001C (with Realtek chipset)
lspci reports a
ethernet controller: realtek semiconductor co., ltd. rtl 8139/8139c/8139c+ (rev 10)
I'm using Debian Sarge with it's default kernel (it should be 2.4.25)
I've also tried with knoppix (both with 2.4 and 2.6 kernel) without any luck

any hint?

Try as root.....

root#> modprobe 8139too

I think that's the module you need. Do a google for your chipset and linux and look for the module you need. But i'm pretty sure it's 8139too.

Adam.

What is your hardware configuration for the ethernet interface?
Check the ouput of dmesg for eth0 errors.

Phorem: yep that's the right module but it seems it was already installed

michaelk: the card was on IRQ 10, it seems the problem was caused by it sharing that IRQ with another device. I've moved it to another pci slot and now it's working...
anyway I wasn't getting any error msg apart from the NET DEV WATCHDOG about the transmission timeout
