Error 8 Activiating ppp0 on Red Hat 9

After working without fail for more than two months my rh9 server refuses to activate my modem (USR Sportster) due to "error 8". I made no config changes. Could this be a hardware failure?

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
