Thumbs up Epson AcuLaser M1400

Hi!

I've bought that Epson printer (AcuLaser M1400) and trying to install it under Slackware 13.37 x64 and Cups 1.4.6
Here is what I've found until now:

- it is actually not laser printer, it uses LED technology - something totally different from previous AcuLaser printers (reads as: not compatible)

- Generic drivers wont work (maybe because in tech specs it says "Emulation on host platform")

- Similar driver wont work to.

- Extracting the PPD file from MAC OS package gave me usable PPD file, but still wont work. Output from error log:

[Job 6] printer-state=3(idle)
[Job 6] printer-state-message="Processing page 1..."
[Job 6] printer-state-reasons=none
[Job 6] Stopping unresponsive job!
Unable to execute /usr/lib64/cups/filter/sehr4ap: No such file or directory

- Extracting the seh4ap file from MAC driver wont work either:

bash-4.1# file sehr4ap
sehr4ap: Mach-O fat file with 2 architectures

- Finally, I've asked tech. support. Response was:

In reply to your email, there is no driver available which I could advise of unfortunately as we do not support Linux operating systems for this printer. (Before this printer I used Epson SX400, but decided to change when it sucked up whole CISS container of ink in one night - no more epson for me after this one)

I need this printer and wont take it back to the store. It is possible to use it via Virtualbox or Vmware, but...

Any info would be great. Thanks!

I never have seen a real laser printer by the way. Don't know what you mean led, so they changed the lcd window? There has been a small window that imparts the charge on the charge drum in all of them.

Take it back is the most easy way and get one that has linux support.

There is a small statement in the owners manual for non-genuine mode and that is all they say. For decades Epson has sold printers that could behave like some other model. I assume this is the case but there is not documentation to say how it works.

Actually they replace the laser with LED array and made the whole printer more compact. Below is the explanation from Oki:

I've bought it for special reason. My printing is almost exclusively electronics PCB artwork on transparency, and for that reason I cannot afford inkjet that will sit there for week or more and just clog itself (or suck up all the ink from CISS tank as before). I need something that is robust enough and has decent image quality. This one is acceptable/good.

Only thing I've found about "inner working" is that that piece of plastic uses own protocol and PCL emulation is done in software (on host side).

I hope someone will came up with idea how to make it working. Until that moment I'll just use it via Virtualbox
