enable soundcard?

hi,

I'm running debian sarge with a 2.4.27-1-386 kernel

I'm trying to get my soundcard working. If I run sndconfig, it tells me the card has been detected, but on the next step tells me it's currently disabled.

I don't remember having done anything to disable it, and it works with windows (I'm dual booting), and worked fine with my old HD knoppix install (until I trashed it and installed debian properly, that is!). Tried googling for help, but I haven't managed to find anything useful.

I've run modconf several times to try and add various sound modules, but however many times I install I never get the + by the module name. It tells me installation is successful, but the thing still has a - next to it.
At the moment, the only sound module I have managed to get installed is soundcore.

thanks

Try running `alsamixer` and see whats muted (red M). "Disabled" may mean muted.

I think it is your sound card driver option can't be set right.
Check the file module.conf.

I also notice that /etc/modules has things listed three or four times, would this have anything to do with it? Pardon my newbie-ness..

Whats is the output of `lspci` and `lsmod`? This will tell us what card you are using, and what modules are loaded.

The module you want is: es1371

So try `modprobe es1371`

should running that return something? I've tried loading es1371 using modconf many times, it says install succesful but never puts a + by the module name. I don't know if this has anything to do with my problem or not.

Sorry, I know I probably sound really stupid here. I've only been using Linux for a month or so, and I'm still not too confident 'fiddling' with it.

Dont worry, we all were new to linux once. And it is certainly something to get used to.

modprobe, when successful won't output anything. So to check if it is loaded, run lsmod again.

See if the es1371 is listed there. If it is, now try some sound application.
