dvd+-rw won't read or write

I have a Mad Dog MD-16XDVD9A2 under Slackware 10.1. The drive shows up just fine (at boot, in /dev and /proc/ide, cdrecord -scanbus, etc.) but if I try to mount a cd or record a cdr, it says that there is nothing in the drive. I've tried it using kernels 2.6.11.7 and 2.4.29, and under knoppix as well, with no success. Any thoughts?

You can attempt a firmware update. What does cdrecord --scanbus say, and where are you mounted? /dev/cd0 to /mnt/cdrom?

uhh..

/dev/hdd-> /dev/dvd, but where is your mount point?

/mnt/dvd?

if not, then make the directory.

Try to mount like, mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdd /mnt/dvd

If that doesn't mount then you may want to flash the BIOS on a winbox, because it isn't talking properly- or it may be a bad drive. You also didn't state what burning software you are using.

Whoops, I mistyped there. That should be /dev/hdd -> /mnt/dvd.

Here is the output when I try to mount a CD:

Quote:
$ sudo mount -t iso9660 -o loop /dev/hdd /mnt/dvd
/dev/hdd: No medium found
As for burning software, I've been trying to use cdrecord. I don't see how that might be relevant, though, when I can't even mount a cd. :/

Update: It seems to read DVDs okay. Only CDs are giving it trouble. It probably is a firmware issue. I'll have to find some way to flash the drive. :/

Well, I updated the firmware and am still having the same problem. I'm beginning to think that this drive just isn't compatible with Linux.

If it's reading DVD's and not CD's.. then yea, it's not a library issue and the drive is probably just crap.

I know that Maddog stuff is Microcenter, CompUSA, and the likes commodity drive. A quick scan of pricewatch will get you a nice plextor or lite-on. Both are rated very well for DVD burning.

Sorry about the bum drive. Some are supposed to be rebadged NEC's, some aren't. I dunno, I do plextor myself. Good luck.
