Open office read only, K-write read/write mode

Hi, have mandrake 9.1 installed and works fine, my problem now is how to get Openoffice to work.
I have copied a couple of .doc files from c: to work on and then I only get read only modus in Open office whereas I get full access in K-write. Yes I have tried to use the edit tool and then I get a new file which is a blue print of the old one but I find it slighty cumbersome.
And no, I am not going to write those files back to c: cause c: is ntfs....
One last question while I am at it, does anyone know how to install additional language packages in Openoffice, specifically Norwegian and french?

I guess the simpliest solution will be to copy the file to Linux partition, check the permission and give write access if needed and then open it.

On Mandrake 3rd cd there's French help for OOo (I suppose the languages are supported in the main package).
