DVD-RW not reading media

Hi,
I have an LG-GH22NS50 DVD RW drive. My problem is it has, all of a sudden, stopped reading any disc I pop into it. I'm running Slack 13.1, although I'm fairly certain this isn't relevant, coz the drive is not reading from discs even at boot-time. I got this drive just a couple of months back, so dust build-up inside isn't very probable. What could be the problem here?

It's an SATA drive, and I checked, both the power and data cable are seated properly.

If the drive is not ready any type of disk even stamped (i.e not burned) CDs then it possible that the unit has failed.

I don't know what you mean exactly by ready. It shows up in the bios just fine, and on the OS as well, only it wont read the discs.

Hi,

Are there any clues in the output of dmesg?

If something is up with that device maybe it is detected during booting.

Hope this helps.

sounds like a laser light failure dvd has a blue light and seems yours is not functioning.
take it back.

??? Haven't come across this, except for very special cases.

It certainly is not as common as you make it out to be!

Well, my drive isn't an external one. I think I mentioned earlier it's a SATA drive. Haven't installed a bootloader, so not been able to boot into Slack yet. Making a bootable USB stick. Hopefully will be done soon.
