DVD Rom - Showing: Speed 48X

Hello!

I am having little probs with my DVD Rom. Its ASUS - 52X.
The prob is with watching movies.

The Drive has been detected as 48X. Why?
I have used Xine to watch DVD - Using Slack 10.0

The output of the "dmesg" is as follows:

root@gizmo:~# dmesg | grep hdd
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00f, BIOS settings: hdcio, hddMA
hdd: ASUS DVD-ROM DVD-E616P 0104, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdd: attached ide-cdrom driver.
hdd: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM drive, 256kB Cache, UDMA(66)

Now the prob is that movies seems to skip (any fast movements). And a mesg occures
which I cant get right now. But as far as I have remember - it says that my system is slow
to cope with the dvd.

Would any one PLS suggest me?

Thanks in advance.

Hello!

The Sys Spec is:

P4 - 2.4 GHz
256 DDR [400]
40 GB Segate (7200)
ATI Radeon - 9200SE
MB - Gigabyte 865 chip
Asus 52X DVD

the error that xine shows is -

"the amount of dropped frame is higher than what your system can handle"

Sounds like you need to enable DMA on your DVD drive.

Here is the command:

hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc

or

hdparm -d1 /dev/cdrom

to make sure this happens at boot you can.

add this line in /etc/hdparm.conf

/dev/cdrom {
dma = on
}

If you don't have hdparm you'll need to install it.
