DVD mount problems w/Debian
this is the most strangest thing i've EVER come across:
i've just added a Liteon DVD-ROM to my existing setup and debian (woody) just fails to mount it whatsoever. i have an existing Liteon CDRW and I use that as my standard CD-ROM and it works fine. but this DVD-ROM just does not mount. during boot, it's actually detected by the system and is assigned a device, but it fails to mount. there's an entry for it under /proc/ide/hdd containing all the normal entries that the other CDRW has, but it just will NOT mount. i've tried just about bloody everything and i can not figure out what is wrong with it........it's probably something really small, but i just can't work it out.....
if someone could help me out........that'd rock.....
thanx....

what does depmod -ae do?
oh and another thing.......when i created a symlink from /dev/hdd to /dev/dvd and then tried to mount /dev/dvd, it gave me an error which said 'too many symlinks' or something in the same vein, so i deleted *both* /dev/dvd and /dev/hdd and tried to symlink them again. little did i know that if both have been appropriately deleted, there's no question of a symlink. yeah i feel dumb............
i need help.......!!!

look at /dev/MAKEDEV you might want to read up
man MAKEDEV
I personally has never being forced to reproduce the lost devices so I've never tried, as for /sbin/depmod -ae it updates the dependencies and usually is ran when hardware setup was modified to ensure modules dependencies consistence. Good luck.

okay, i've messed around with this some more and this is the final error i receive after mounting a cd onto my CDRW, ejecting it and then putting the same cdrom into my DVD-ROM:
mount: No medium found
this is just.......unbelievable. i can actually eject the dvd with the eject command, but it doesn't mount a cd that was just mounted by my CDRW moments ago. i know for sure the DVD-ROM isn't faulty coz i just tested it with windows.......so......it's definitely not a hardware problem. absolutely bewildered.
any kind of help will be VERY much appreciated.
word hommies......

Hey I'm getting the same No Medium Found after I installed MPlayer or XINE. Anyone have any idea what this stupidity is about?
