Dots All Over Screen AMD A10-5800K

First, know that I am relatively new to Linux. I built a computer a little while ago, and installed Linux Mint 16 on it. For 3 days it worked perfectly, then on the 4th day I got the strangest symptom:

http://i.imgur.com/zdgpgVC.png

Dots completely cover my screen, and move whenever the screen updates. There's a pattern to them; they usually show the window below. My computer is almost completely unusable, but I'm determined to get to the bottom of it.

Here's what I've done so far that didn't solve problem:
  • Bought a different motherboard
  • Tested different desktop environments
  • Tested on a different distro (Fedora 20)
  • Tried the proprietary driver
  • Tested the monitor on a different computer (works)
  • Ran memtest (no errors after 4 passes)

I begrudgingly installed windows 7 to test if my hardware was working, and it ran smoothly. Of note, I also tested Linux Mint 13 and the problem was gone. So due to everything working smoothly on both, and it working on an older version, it seems that my hardware is not the problem, and I believe the problem is with the kernel. That is the extent of my diagnosis.

What puzzles me is how there is such a serious problem that it can persist through multiple reinstalls of an OS, and a different OS, yet it didn't show up for 3 days...

Here is all the pertinent info:

I am running Linux Mint 16 Cinammon Edition, Kernel version 3.14.3-031403-generic

Output of dmesg:

I've seen this when RAM [allocated to the video] is bad.

Forgot to mention that I ran memtest. After 4 passes there were no errors. Is this different from the RAM when it's allocated to the video, and if so how do I test it?

You have a discrete video card or is it using system memory?

The latter, I believe. It's an APU so the GPU is on the same unit, I believe all the resources are shared. I do not have a discrete card either.

Does the problem persist if you boot some liveCD? Like http://www.sysresccd.org/

Yes, unfortunately. The kernel version in the latest system rescue is 3.10.35, for reference.

Do you have just one RAM stick or two? If two, try removing one at the time.

Thanks for all your help so far. I do have two sticks; I removed one but it still persists.

And if you remove it and use the other one?

I swapped out the first stick for the second, no change. Then I took a stick from a computer I know to be working, also no change. I tried putting it into the second slot as well, same.

Also should mention I did check earlier and my motherboard does support the memory sticks I'm using.

You could try allocating more RAM to the graphics in the bios. Or something like that, as I don't have any hardware like that.

Have you tried some DEs such as xfce with no compositing at all?
Do the dots appear on the logon screen too?
What is the 'sensors' output (run 'sudo sensors-detect' before)?
Quote:
Tried the proprietary driver
So you had the same result with the proprietary catalyst AND the OSS radeon driver? These drivers are very different, having the same issues would point to either some hardware issue or misbehaving software (compositing?).
Was the OS upgraded in those 3 days when it worked?
BTW how much time did you spend under Win7? Installed the driver from AMDs site and tried something that uses acceleration?

Tried this, allocated 2GB, the most it would let me; no change.

Have you tried some DEs such as xfce with no compositing at all?
Do the dots appear on the logon screen too?
What is the 'sensors' output (run 'sudo sensors-detect' before
So you had the same result with the proprietary catalyst AND the OSS radeon driver? These drivers are very different, having the same issues would point to either some hardware issue or misbehaving software (compositing?).
Was the OS upgraded in those 3 days when it worked?
BTW how much time did you spend under Win7? Installed the driver from AMDs site and tried something that uses acceleration?
Yes, the System Rescue CD Emerson showed me uses xfce. The dots appear on the logon screen as well in Mint, but I should say that for the BIOS, loading screens for installation media, and the splash screen, none of them display dots.

Output of sensors:
Code:
radeon-pci-0008
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +3.0°C (crit = +120.0°C, hyst = +90.0°C)

k10temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +11.8°C (high = +70.0°C)
                       (crit = +80.0°C, hyst = +79.0°C)
Yes, after installing fglrx I had the same result as radeon. I don't remember but it's safe to say I did update in those 3 days. However... that doesn't explain why it still wouldn't work after a complete reinstall. I didn't install Catalyst when I used Win7, actually. If it comes down to it, I'll reinstall and try that out.

Is there any other information I can give that would be useful?
