does sata2 data support CD audio playback?

Hi all,

I seem to be having extraordinary problems getting my cd/dvd drives working on my newly built system.

ALSA works fine via spdif on mythtv - but I can't get dvds to play or cds to play no matter how I try.

Do I have to have the audio out cable from the cd player or will the sata2cable support the streaming of the cd audio by default (what I suspect since one of my dvd drives does have a connector for that but the other does not!)

IU want to set the system up with one drive dedicated to DVD playback and one for CDs (and writing of data)

I posted this question in a way that I think was too confusing before. Hopefully taking it from this angle will help.

It may be permissions related or mount options related too I guess:

some details:

Code:
mythology ~ # ls -l /dev/sr*
brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 11, 0 Apr 11 15:00 /dev/sr0
brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 11, 1 Apr 11 15:00 /dev/sr1

mythology ~ # cat /etc/group
...
audio::18:mythtv,stardotstar
cdrom::19:haldaemon,mythtv,stardotstar
dialout::20:root
tape::26:root
video:!:27:root,mythtv,stardotstar
cdrw::80:haldaemon,mythtv,stardotstar
...

mythology ~ # cat /etc/mtab
/dev/sda3 / ext3 rw,noatime 0 0
proc /proc proc rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec 0 0
udev /dev tmpfs rw,nosuid 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts rw,nosuid,noexec 0 0
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2 rw,noatime 0 0
/dev/sdb /data xfs rw 0 0
shm /dev/shm tmpfs rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs rw,noexec,nosuid,devmode=0664,devgid=85 0 0
binfmt_misc /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc binfmt_misc rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev 0 0
/dev/shm /dev/shm tmpfs rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev 0 0
/dev/sr0 /mnt/bdrom iso9660 ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev 0 0
mythology ~ #

mythology mnt # ls -l
total 16
dr-xr-xr-x 2 root cdrom 4096 Mar 29 12:09 bdrom
dr-xr-xr-x 2 root cdrom 4096 Apr 20  2007 cdrom
drwx------ 2 root root  4096 Apr 20  2007 floppy
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root  4096 Apr 13 20:20 panther
mythology mnt # mount /mnt/bdrom
mythology mnt # cd bdrom
mythology bdrom # ls
audio_ts  video_ts
mythology bdrom #

mythology bdrom # mount /mnt/cdrom
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr1,
       missing codepage or helper program, or other error
       In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail  or so
MPlayer or xine don't seem to think they can play the dvd even though it mounts and is at the right location.

cdplay seems to think it is playing but there is no audio - just track sequence in silence.

Code:
mythology bdrom # cdplay -d /dev/sr1 -c -v
Playing from CD-Track: 1
Playing cd-track: 1 [05:36]
I may need some help with my alsa config but that is enough information to get someone to give me a headstart?

TIA
Will

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you need the audio-out cable for CD audio. The SATA cable is for data transfer only.

...and since you can/t mount cds you can/t get the music as a digital data signal right? Hmmm, you might be right...

I believe that cdplay does not use digital audio extraction (DAE) so it will not work without an audio cable so instead use xmms.
