Well surely if you use an audio player to read a FLAC file from a CD or DVD, it will be read at less than 1x, as the disc will just be read fast enough to get the audio data in real time (1x for an audio CD, about 0.66x for a FLAC file)? Ok, the player will buffer a few seconds of data, but the read speed will be nearly real-time.
I agree that fast reading will overheat the disc, but I don't think you'll ever get to a temperature that will damage the disc - sratches are much more of a menace.
