Display flickering when no mouse

I have a USB wireless optical mouse that I use with an HP laptop running RedHat Linux.

Two issues:

1. If the mouse is not connected, then the X Windows display
does not come up until it IS connected and I can see weird
flashing of the display between a black screen and the
command line login prompt.

What is this due to and how do I fix this?

2. The laptop has a Syntaptics touchpad that can also serve as a mouse but it is never detected. Any way to correct this.

The ideal situation would be that if the USB mouse is plugged in, it would be active, and if no USB mouse is connected, then it would use the touchpad. Any hints on setting this up??

I also have to get it fixed up so that if the USB mouse is disconnected I can still get to the X Windows login screen.

Thx...
