Unhappy Display Problem - Monitor Flickering(?)

Okay.. for you gurus out there...

I've just installed (after many previous attempts with Redhat) Mandrake and so far so good, as far as everything works!

My ONLY issue is that whenever say a program is looking for something in the X Windows (like in KDE, Gnome, whatever), it flickers with horizontal lines whenever the machine is "thinking".

It's generally when a window/screen is going to change or refresh itself, this happens.

So say I started moving my mouse all crazy in circles just being bored, little horizontal lines will kind of flicker on and off, all over the screen (generally in the middle where a window is).

I've checked my refresh rate:

Monitor: NEC MultiSync LCD 1500M
(30-61hsync / 50-77vsync)
VideoCard: Diamond Stealth 3d 2000 (S3 Virge)

Now I've looked in my xf86config and xf86config-4 files and it has the right monitor/video card in there, with correct refresh rates... and I'm getting this annoying flickering.

Is it that the video card is set incorrectly? Or the monitor? If so, how do I reset it to some default setting?

Any help appreciated...

-Frustrated with annoying display-

It does sound like a problem specific to X rather than the distro. Do you know which version of X you are using (which Mandrake distro are you using?) It may be that using a different version (either 3.3.6 or 4.x.x) will make a difference

Now Samba...(and winXP) - I'm a brat, I know :)

Thanks for responding

Well as it turns out, the problem seemed to correct itself. It's Mandrake 8.0 with Xfree 4.0.3 (or something). But somehow the refresh settings righted itself. I think it had something to do with my belkin monitor switch.

Anyway, new question...

Trying to set up Samba on Linux to be able to talk to the other computers on the LAN. All the computers are XP running on DHCP.

I've tried setting this all up in SWAT, changing the config file, going through tutorials, reading doc, etc, it's just doesn't work.

How do I find out/change the Linux box's computer name? I can change the hostname but the computer name itself?

Like I'll look in Windows Network Places in Windows and I'll see "localhost" listed under the workgroup and when I open the workgroup, it shows Samba Server 2.0.7 (Localhost) - Desc: Samba Server 2.0.7. So I'm thinking the Server String in the smb.conf file is just the description and I changed it.. don't think it connected.

What do I need to set up?

SMBuser? password? I don't get that and can't find any good like "Idiot's Guide to SMB" because I sure as hell feel like one

I tried typing in: smbclient \\\\computer_name\/c$ -U Administrator
but got:
Added interface ip=my ip, bcast=my ip, nmask=255.etc...
then Get_Hostbyname: Unknown host artichoke.localdomain (my linux hostname)

Thanks in advance.. I'm fried searching Google.

I have no experience with Samba (apart from some Friday nights! ) so I don't have a clue what to say. Sorry.

I can only point you to the Samba How-to at But you probably have already looked at that.
