I have installed the hcfpcimodem drivers from the Linuxant site and everything seemed to go ok except that the modem does not connect. When I attempt to connect I get the message "Modem Ready" followed by "Initialising Modem" at which stage this stays on screen until I cancel.
In the Mandrake Control Centre/Hardware I now have Modem listed that was not there before but when I click on it for further info it gives none at all. However if I go to Others in the Hardware list the modem is listed with the following info.
Vendor Conexant
Bus PCI
Bus Identity 14f1:1033:122d:4027
Location on Bus 2:b:0
Description Winmodem
Media Class Communication Others
Module Unknown
When booting the only item that Listed as failed is Echo which I assume is to do with Networking but perhaps somebody could advise if this is not so.
I have run "lsmod" and hcfpciengine, hcfpciserial are shown.
I am very new to Linux and any help would be very much appreciated.

What utility are you using to dial the modem? A long time ago there was a problem with KPPP which would cause my modem to hang if I set the modem speaker volume too high. The value supplied with the AT command was unsupported and the modem would ignore the command and not return a status code.
I don't know what the syslog is called on Mandrake but it should be in the /var/log directory and is most likely called sys.log, messages, or something similar. Does it have any information relating to dialer dialogue between the PC and the modem? What is the full text of the "Echo" failure?
Thanks for your interest and yes I am using KPPP to dial as far as I can remember. I am currently using XP to connect but when I go back to Linux I will check your suggestions and advise.
I went to a Terminal window and opened /var/log and then dir which listed amongst others "syslog". However at this stage I was unable to open syslog but I think this was because I am not putting the correct command. Perhaps you would be kind enough to show me what I should enter when in the /var/log directory to open syslog.
Regarding ETHO when booting Mandrake it shows "Bringing up interface Etho [failed]

In regards to the syslog you can use a variety of commands. The easiest is probably "vi /var/log/syslog". You can use the page-up, page-down keys to scroll through it looking for anything that relates to ppp, tty, lcp, or dial. You can also try dmesg to get the most recent entries.
If you don't see anything try enabling the KPPP debug log window before dialing.
As for eth0, I guess there was a typo in your original post where it refered to "Echo". Your right Eth0 is your network. Are you on a LAN?
What do you get when you querry the modem through kppp?
Thanks once again for your help I have finally managed to connect. For info the problem appeared to be that I had assumed that as my modem was on com3 in Windows it would be on dev/tty02 but on that setting the modem could not be found. On reading the instructions from Linuxant "correctly" and changing to /dev/ttyshcf0 the connection works fine. The Echo was a typing error as you surmised.
