Debian can't find pcmcia cd-rom
I just installed the first CD's worth of Debian 3.0 on my Toshiba Portege 7020CT laptop. Everything works great, except that, having only the first CD, I don't have X or any version of a desktop. So:
Question 1) This laptop has a pcmcia cd-rom drive. I remembered to build pcmcia support into the kernel, but when the installation finalized it told me that it hadn't detected a need for pcmcia support and asked to uninstall it. I told it no, of course...but now I can't figure out how to make it detect my cd-rom drive. Does anyone know how I can do this?
which leads to...
Question 2) I need to install stuff from at least the second CD in order to get X. I probably can copy the contents of the CD to my hard drive as I did to install the first CD, but I'd really rather not (see question 1). Either way, how do I access it with the intent of installing new packages? I gather that most debian packages aren't .rpms or tar files, and I'm not sure what program the installer ran.
thanks very much,
Laura
