Debian 3.0 won't recognize PCMCIA Cd-rom

Hi, I have finally gave in and installed the base program for Debian 3.0 using floppies onto my P100 Acer laptop. However, it still won't recognize the external CD-rom even though the PCMCIA cardmanger seemed to be installed and loaded. How should i go about mounting the CD-rom?

also, i am totally new to Unix so the commands are absolutely foreign to me. i am trying to learn as much and as fast as i can. any suggestions out there for a good intro website/book?
