Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

cvoicecontrol and recording interface

Hi. I want to play around with cvoicecontrol for voice recognition. It seems to be really old, but Perlbox was the only other thing I have found so far that seems to be a complete solution, and Perlbox is not very good at recognizing the words, and does not seem to have any configurable options to improve the situation.

Anyway, when I run microphone_config, cvoicecontrol says

Code:
No mixer devices available!
Please purchase a sound card and install it!
However, my microphone system works fine with audacity and gnome-voice-recorder (once I select the correct recording device). I'm thinking that because cvoicecontrol is ten-year-old software, there must be a difference in the way cvoicecontrol detects the mixer or sound device.

The cvoicecontrol manual mentions a /dev/sndstat device, which my system does not seem to have, although there is a /dev/snd directory full of devices.

I have an ALSA-based sound system (from the 2.6.34 kernel), which uses alsamixer (v.1.0.21). I have a Creative Labs SB Audigy (rev 04) sound card, with a Mic-in port.

Code:
# ls -l /dev/snd

Linux version 2.6.34-gentoo-r12 (root@livecd) (gcc version 4.4.4 (Gentoo 4.4.4-r2 p1.2, pie-0.4.5) )
Is there some symbolic link I could create, or other compatibility issue I could deal with, that would allow me to use cvoicecontrol on my modern system?
