I am new to linux and have the same problem as the other posters in this thread. I have tried the suggestions above, but have had no success so far. It seems that my install cannot recognise that there even is a built in sound card. When I enter the 'lsmod' command it does seem that there is a loaded CS4232 module... that is, it appears in the list of items returned. However, when I enter the 'lspci -vv' command I do not see any text identifying the irq settings, etc. for a sound card of any kind. The ethernet card, on-board video, ide ports, etc. appear, but no sound card. Just to recap: the computer I have is a Dell Optiplex GX1 (PII 400) with on-board video and sound and my distribution is Red Hat 8.0.
Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much.
P.S. A hard drive with 'another' operating system installed can get sound from this machine so I don't think that it is a hardware issue.
lspci doesnṫ identify a sound card.
The chip is a CS4236B.
since lspci doesnt show any IRQ etc, where can I find the details ?
You keep refering to CS4232 on this thread. instead of CS4236. Why ?
This linux module caters for both ?
I thought that this adapter was Crystal Ausdio. But people keep refering to it as SB Live ? (Even Dell !)
A solution is to dowload sndconfig and execute it.
It checks for the sound adapter (in this case integrated), runs a n audio output test, confirm if correct.
And wiz bang it updates the Red Hat files and the pain is almost gone.
The only reminant of the problem is that the Gnome desktop soundcard detect utility
still reports that there are no sound cards installed.
I am not quite a newbie but my head is sore from beating against the wall!
I have the same problem, but the responses posted here are not working for me.
Scenario:
Dell GX1 with fedora core 1 installed
redhat-config-soundcard cannot find a device
the onboard soundacard (cs4232) is enabled in the bios
cs4232 is found in dmesg (output below)
lspci -vv does not see it (output below)
modprobe cs4232 io=0x534 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=3 results in now output to the screen but cs4232 is loaded (output below)
Thoughts?!?! Help!!!
Does someone have a working config file I can copy? Would that work?
Thanks!

cs4232: set synthio and synthirq to use the wavefront facilities.

I found the solution for this issue by installing sndconfig. This allowed me to hear sound on my RH9 system, which is better than my Mandrake 9.2 system!!!
