cpuidle for linux?

i think my dell inspiron 510m's cpu gets too hot or something and ruins every hard drive i put in it. so i was wondering if there is a cpuidle-like program for linux so i could lower the temperature of the cpu/computer? there is no option for temperature in my bios. i am currently running fedora core 4 on my dell laptop.

I think i discovered the problem, kind of embarrasing. The little rubber "feet" on the bottom of the computer had come off, all of them, and the 510m's air intake/fan is underneath and wasn't getting enough air in cause it was sitting too close to the table. i think that was the problem. i made some makeshift feet out of an old mousepad and taped them on the bottom and it does feel cooler now =)
