Could my gfx card be limiting my monitor?

I've just nicked the 19" monitor from my (currently dead) main machine and transferred it to my second (server) machine. I know my monitor can do up to 1600xWhatever, and XWindows on my (dead) main machine was running things at 1280x1024.

However, since I've switched I can only get 1024x768. I've set it to the previous settings (from memory), I've played with them, I've tried including MetaModes, I've even upgraded to X.org (under the slackware-current tree). But still I can't get it to play nicely.

I'm now thinking that it might be my graphics card. I'm using an "ATI Mach64 3D Rage II+DVD" card. Could this be limiting the monitor's resolution?

I dont think so. Try xvidtune to see the available modes. If the highest mode here is 1024x768 you probably need to add some additional modes to your X config file. (And if only depths are specified in the config file it will allow you to go trough all standart resolutions supported by your card.

If I remember correctly from past experience, the Rage series has insufficient RAM or DAC speed to run higher than 1024x768.

Get a cheap new card instead

Thanks. I've got an old S3 card knocking about somewhere... maybe I'll stuff that in and see where I get.
