suggestions on gfx card

well, i bought a radeon 9200 a whiiile ago but now i wanna play some games on linux heh and after realising both the card is crap the drivers are also completely shit and i havn't been able to get hardware acceleration working at all.

so i've decided my bank account can afford to purchase a geforce fx 5700 256 card. I'm just wondering before i buy a new gfx card if this will actually work well with linux and let me be able to play some decent games (doom3, ut 2004) stuff like that with good graphics and good fps's.

oh by the way i have a athlon 2500+ with 512mg ram.. if anybody out there has got a 5700 and is using linux your comments on the setup would be muchly appreciated Smile

Thanks,
Bryan.

Well, I have a GeForce Fx 5200 and I gotta say it works much better than any ATI card. Just be sure to get the official installer from www.nvidia.com/object/linux and read the readme. You have to have your kernel source installed unless you're using a generic kernel. You should also check the warning about the linked libraries in the readme. Xfree86 was crashing for me until I realized that it was still linked to old versions because of a 3d library I had installed earlier. I don't know how well Doom 3 will work yet since they haven't released a Linux binary...I fear 128 megs of video memory won't be enough!
