Core 2 duo performance

I currently use slackware current on an Athlon XP. I am thinking of upgrading to a Core 2 Duo system.

I would like to stick with slackware the only thing is it doesn´t have official 64bit support.

If I just recompile the kernel for my new cpu I think that should give me a performance increase.

My question is, will it be worth changing to a 64bit compiled distro like Debian or Gentoo?

Thanks!

I say no, I've used both 32bit and 64bit distros on my AMD64 and there is stuff all difference if any at all. Stick with what you like or if you really wanna try, there is Slamd64 which is a 64bit port of Slackware.
