how to compile a kernel with modular sound?

I've compiled a new kernel (2.6.7) like 20 times now and sndconfig still isn't working. It gives an error that I don't have modular sound enabled cause it can't find soundcore. I've compiled with sound support as module and according to a site (can't remember which it was) this was the right option.

Is sndconfig broken or do I have the wrong option enabled?

Having sound support enabled as a module (soundcore) is done through setting the Device drivers --> Sound --> Soundcard support checked as a module. You need it to look like <M> in make menuconfig, not <*> (which would make it built-in).

I have that but why don't I have the module soundcore and does sndconfig say that I don't have it. It looks like I can't do anything wrong there and I have tried compiling the kernel so many times but it just doesn't work Is it maybe the kernel compilation that goes wrong (bug or something?). I have the modular sound support as you told me and as I had been trying to compile it all those times and if I look in the make history (don't know how to call it) I have this:

Code:
  LD sound/core/built-in.o
  LD sound/drivers/built-in.o
  LD sound/drivers/mpu401/built-in.o
  LD sound/drivers/opl3/built-in.o
  LD sound/drivers/opl4/built-in.o
  LD sound/drivers/vx/built-in.o
  LD sound/i2c/built-in.o
  LD sound/i2c/other/built-in.o
  LD sound/isa/built-in.o
  LD sound/isa/ad1816a/built-in.o
  LD sound/isa/ad1848/built-in.o
  LD sound/isa/cs423x/built-in.o
  LD sound/isa/es1688/built-in.o
  LD sound/isa/gus/built-in.o
  LD sound/isa/opti9xx/built-in.o
  LD sound/isa/sb/built-in.o
  LD sound/isa/wavefront/built-in.o
  LD sound/oss/built-in.o
  LD sound/parisc/built-in.o
  LD sound/pci/built-in.o
  LD sound/pci/ac97/built-in.o
  LD sound/pci/ali5451/built-in.o
  LD sound/pci/au88x0/built-in.o
  LD sound/pci/cs46xx/built-in.o
  LD sound/pci/emu10k1/built-in.o
  LD sound/pci/ice1712/built-in.o
  LD sound/pci/korg1212/built-in.o
  LD sound/pci/mixart/built-in.o
  LD sound/pci/nm256/built-in.o
  LD sound/pci/rme9652/built-in.o
  LD sound/pci/trident/built-in.o
  LD sound/pci/vx222/built-in.o
  LD sound/pci/ymfpci/built-in.o
  LD sound/pcmcia/pdaudiocf/built-in.o
  LD sound/pcmcia/vx/built-in.o
  LD sound/ppc/built-in.o
  LD sound/sparc/built-in.o
  LD sound/synth/built-in.o
  LD sound/synth/emux/built-in.o
  LD sound/usb/built-in.o
That doesn't seem rigth as it's doing the complete opposite from what I'm trying to do isn't it?

anyone know why the kernel doesn't include modular sound support if I'm damn sure it's checked. I've compiled kernel 2.6.7 over 25 times, kernel 2.6.6 2 times now and it just doesn't work
