Run `alsamixer -V all` then adjust some settings. The pops and clicks could be caused by digital distortion from the sound card re-writing registers to make sure the PCI bus goes at 33 MHz, CD-ROM/DVD-ROM is injecting its own distortion, or the AC97 mixer setting is not set properly.
Creative Labs makes crap, so invest in a better sound card like Audiotrak Prodigy 7.1.
well i have a DVD-ROM drive and a CDRW drive...i also have a TV card, though i haven't used it yet on linux...
i had to connect a sound cable from the DVD drive to the sound card in order to get cd/dvd sound playback...but the connector was filled by the TV card, so i moved the TV card to aux and put the DVD rom where it belonged.
so maybe that's what is causing it. but if so, how would i go about getting sound for both cd/dvd and the tv tuner card if i can't connect them to the sound card?...
or maybe i'm missing the point.
(and working for americorps doesn't really allow for investing in computer parts...i would if i could )
Remove both CD-ROM and DVD-ROM from the sound card. Then use DAE (digital audio extraction). If mplayer, xmms, and others are compiled to include DAE, you should have no problem playing audio CD.
Mute the cdrom, aux, and other analog input if you are not using it. Also put the sound card in the last PCI slot.
i'm using Kmix cuz it's the one that's in my system tray...i'm not quite sure if "mute" is green light on or off.
i assume everything is muted.
but my mp3s are clicking a bit...it seems to happen more when i'm using other apps while playing stuff on kaffeine.
i also don't have xmms, because the k apps seem to be doing well enough and i want to get things running smooth before adding more apps.
so i'm still trying to figure it out...perhaps i still need to disconnect the dvd rom and tv card from the sound card, but how would that affect the mp3 play?
thnx

next day:
i disconnected sound cables, but clicking continues. thespeakers just click...even with nothing running (i haven't tried it with the computer off yet). could it be my wireless router interfering? i don't use the wireless function, but it is on.
