Cdrw

Ive got a BenQ CDRW on the computer i built and i use Nero to burn Cd's with it. my problem is that it will not detect cdrw's for anything. no matter what program i use it will just tell me to insert a blank disc. I was wondering if this could be the actual drive itself or if it could be windows telling the cdrw to drop dead. At first it only did it once in awhile with certain Cdr's and now it just does it no matter what i do with it. Just wondering if theres any settings i could change or if its just a really crappy drive. All the other functions of the drive work fine.
thanks
