cd writing and curious

I use cdrdao to copy music cds. On the newer computer I have a nec cd/dvd writer. It couldn't read in a cd I wanted to backup, probably because of a scratch. Kept going for hours, never reaching the end (line from a song somewhere)
So I read it in on the oldcomp writer sony CRX something. That got it in the computer, scratches and all! But then the sony couldn't write what it had read in!, so I transfered it to newcomp, and the NEC writer wrote it!
Just out of curiosity, what is happening here?

A similar thing happens to me with my optical drives. Some discs just won't run proper on the cd writer but when I use the DVD rom, they are read fine. Maybe DVD drives have got some better technology somehow.

I also have to do the same thing, rip on computer transfer across network, burn on another computer. I dont know why just have to. Windows has the same problem.

Well, it's nice to know you're not alone!
Do any of you have experience with dual layer dvds?
I saw a sony dual layer writer. But here, in Northern Germany at least, you can't buy the discs. I told them at the shop they were mad selling dvd writers to which you couldn't buy the discs. But that don't stop 'em!
Can you buy the discs in US of A?

In the UK, it's the same thing, Very few shops actually sell the dual layer dvd media though they sell the drives.

We can finally get them here in Oz. Cheapest I've seen was $12, while name brand singles are about $2...
