cant install printer

im running on slack, and this is my first time fiddling with printer installation manually.

first i tried with a command line. it spits out errors like these:

lpstat: get-classes failed: server-error-service-unavailable
lpstat: get-printers failed: server-error-service-unavailable
lpstat: get-printers failed: server-error-service-unavailable
lpstat: get-printers failed: server-error-service-unavailable
lpstat: get-jobs failed: server-error-service-unavailable

lpadmin: add-printer (enable) failed: server-error-service-unavailable

. I compiled cups 1.1.8 and the hpijs file. and it shows in gs -h.

i also tried with a gui thru the kde control panel. it didnt even let me access the add printer wizard, all i could do was add another pseudo one.

can anyone lend me a hand here?

Load up your favorite web browser, and go to http://localhost:631. This is the CUPS web admin interface.

As for the KDE printer wizard, make sure you pressed the "Administrator Mode" button. Gotta be root.

im always logged as root when i try to set up something. so the wizard still doesnt show.

and how would the web admin interface for cups work if cups spits out such errors (and yes, it doesnt). the interface doesnt let me select anything for device

i also tried doing it with the apsfilter setup program. everything was good untill i tried to print a test page. it spit out that there was no such device (/dev/lp0) (i have a deskjet 500, parallel port printer)
