Cannot play sound on SUSE 9.3

Everything works perfectly with SUSE except for sound. YaST automatically detects a sound card and configures it, but sound still doesn't play. And I've run alsaconf, but still, no luck. What should I do?

There's no error message. It's just that no sound comes out of my speakers when I try to play it.

I'm not going to post the whole thing, but it seems to be saying that the sound card wasn't detected and it's "tainting the kernel." However, in YaST, it says my Intel sound card has been configured and is running. I read that I can fix this with the mixer, but I can't run alsamixer (invalid parameter) and kmix just has an empty drop down box and I can't access anything.

Also, I downloaded gamix, but when I run it, it says that no sound cards were detected and none of been configured, even though YaST lists HDA Intel, Configured as snd-card-0. This is getting ridiculous. This simple procedure of playing sounds should not take this long to activate.

Sounds promising. However, I have no idea how to accomplish this. I'm really a newbie; do you think you could provide instructions?

Hmm...I'm probably not experienced enough to do that. Will it work also if I just install again? You would think a product such as this would allow for sound without the user having to do anything.

reinstalling willnot help as the module is not built inside the kernel

What if I install a different distro that recognizes and configures it automatically? If Linux can make my keyboard and mouse work without doing anything, it should definitely be able to make sound work.

It my seen stupid but try and look for any volume controls with suse. It does not always turn the sound up, try and turn the sound your self. Try and open up Kmix that can adjust volume controllers. I have used suse 9.1 awhile ago and rember that there are several ways to do this. going to suse 9.3 64bit soon.
