Cannot install driver for ATi radeon 9800pro

I have downloaded a rpm-file from the ATi website and used alien to convet it into a deb.file. Then I tried to install it with dpkg and got some errors.

I am using Ubuntu 5.04.

# dpkg -i fglrx-6-8-0_8.14.13-2_i386.deb
(Reading database ... 57510 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking fglrx-6-8-0 (from fglrx-6-8-0_8.14.13-2_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing fglrx-6-8-0_8.14.13-2_i386.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite `/usr/X11R6/lib/', which is also in package xlibmesa-gl
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:

When trying to uninstall xlibmesa-gl synaptics wanted to remove a lot of packages (like some gnome-packages, gimp and so on).

Do I have to choose between my favorite programs and drivers or is there someway to install the drivers without removing a lot of installed packages?
